German prosecutors have dropped an investigation into alleged fraud against former Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich, in return for payment of a six-figure euro sum.
Prosecutors in Bonn believe Ullrich, 34, was doped during his racing career. However they said payment of the six-figure sum to a charitable organization and the state would mean the retired cyclist would not have to face charges. Further civil proceedings in connection with alleged doping may still come to court. Bonn prosecutor Fred Apostel said that because doping was widespread in the sport, Ullrich had believed that without doping he would not be competitive.
