Chinese soldiers have begun draining a lake that was created by a landslide set off by last month's earthquake that killed almost 70,000 people.
Officials had feared that the swollen lake in Sichuan province was threatening to break through a make-shift dam. Around 250,000 people have been evacuated to higher ground. The official Xinhua News Agency has reported that engineers were monitoring bridges and river banks downstream to see if they would hold. Soldiers were trying to dig a secondary channel to speed up the draining process.
