Fierce clashes between allied Somali-Ethiopian troops and Islamist insurgents have left at least eleven people dead in the Somali capital of Mogadishu.
The Ethiopian-backed troops launched raids in the city's southern Wardhigley district, sparking fighting in which the rivals targeted each other with heavy artillery. Elsewhere a local freelance journalist, who had contributed to various western news organisations, was killed by unknown gunmen in the town of Kismayo, 500 kilometres south of the capital.
