European Union ministers have agreed on a common policy to stem illegal immigration in the 27-nation-bloc.
Ministers meeting in the French city of Cannes expressed optimism that the "European Pact on Immigration and Asylum" could be finalised by October, after the French EU presidency was forced to water down the plan. The pact sets out principles for the EU to manage migration, fight illegal immigration and help development in poor countries that people are leaving or travelling through to get to Europe. Merkel Vows to Back French EU Presidency ... the deal did not mean that Europe would be surrounded by walls. However, he emphasised that illegal immigration had to be fought while legal migration should be supervised. He added that there were six million illegal immigrants currently living in Europe.
