Speaking in Sydney, the Pontiff said he was deeply sorry for the pain and suffering the victims had endured. Victims of church abuse in Australia had demanded the Pope issue a public apology during his visit to Sydney, for the six day World Youth Day gathering. A group representing abuse victims in Australia says there have been 107 convictions for church abuse, but that there could be thousands of victims as only a few cases ever go to court.
