Three German mountaineers seized by Kurdish rebels in eastern Turkey have been freed after 12 days in captivity.
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier told reporters in Berlin that the three men were now in the custody of Turkish security forces and were as well as could be expected after their ordeal. A Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman said the PKK freed the Germans in a mountainous area where they were found by Turkish police. It is unclear whether any ransom was paid to secure their release. The trio was seized by separatist rebels from the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, on July 8 during a climbing expedition to Mount Ararat.
