22.07.2008 - EU welcomes arrest of war crimes suspect Karadzic

The European Union has welcomed the arrest of Bosnian Serb war crimes suspect Radovan Karadzic, after being on the run for 12 years.

French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, said it would help rapprochement between Serbia and the bloc. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has described the arrest as a ''historic moment'', saying that the victims need to know that ''massive human rights violations do not go unpunished''. Merkel praised Serbian President Boris Tadic for Monday's arrest and said it underscored Serbia's aspirations for EU membership.
