Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is in Berlin on a two-day visit to Germany.
He was welcomed by Chancellor Angela Merkel with full military honours before the two leaders were scheduled to hold talks. Al-Maliki's visit follows close on the heels of a visit this month by Economy Minister Michael Glos to Baghdad. That visit was meant to signify Germany's strong interest in reviving economic and business ties. Iraq was historically a strong partner for Germany, and in the 1980s bilateral trade reached about four billion euros a year.
