The European Commission has suspended hundreds of millions of euros in aid to Bulgaria, citing corruption, organised crime and spending irregularities.
The Commission indefinitely froze some 500 million euros in aid and blacklisted two Bulgarian government agencies handling EU funds and said that the measures would remain in place until sound financial management structures were established and operating effectively. Bulgaria joined the European Union in January 2007. It is considered the poorest nation of the 27-member bloc.
