Energy group E.ON has confirmed it is cutting 1,800 sales jobs as it closes two-thirds of its domestic service centres in Germany.
The positions will go as the firm, Germany's largest gas and electricity provider, reduces its number of call centres from 60 to 20.
Klaus-Dieter Maubach, chairman of E.ON Energie, told a German newspaper there would be no compulsory redundancies.
"We are looking at partial retirement among other possibilities," he said.

The Dusseldorf-based company owns a number of overseas operations, and is one of the UK's largest gas and electricity suppliers.
Back in May, German staff walked out in a dispute over pay.
