Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has been in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, trying to drum up support for Russia's stance on two breakaway Georgian provinces.
Russia has attracted widespread condemnation for its military action in Abkhazia and South Ossetia over the past two weeks. At the meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, or SCO, Medvedev had hoped to get China on side as a powerful ally. The SCO instead issued a joint statement that denounces the use of force and calls for respect for every country's territorial integrity.
