The vice presidential running mate to US Republican presidential candidate John McCain has addressed the party faithful at a rally in Dayton Ohio.
Observers say the surprise choice of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is aimed at helping McCain appeal to women voters. The 44-year-old Palin is known as an anticorruption crusader. She is also an opponent of abortion rights and a member of the National Rifle Association. If McCain were elected president, Palin would become the first woman vice president in the United States. Earlier, Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama accepted his party's nomination with a rousing speech in front of 84,000 supporters in Denver, Colorado. His running mate is to be Delaware senator Joe Biden.
