Russia and Germany will try to calm tensions in Europe over the conflict in Georgia.
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov agreed via telephone to put an end to rising tensions. However, Steinmeier reiterated his criticism of Russia's decision to recognise the independence of the two Georgian breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The foreign minister also criticised Georgia's move to break all diplomatic ties with Russia. Tensions flare on Georgian borders ... the Georgia crisis that is scheduled to kick off in Brussels in Monday. The 27-member bloc will also use the meeting to re-examine its relations with Moscow. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has urged EU leaders to show "common sense" at the summit and ignore calls for sanctions against Moscow.
