Hundreds of thousands of Mexicans are participating in protest marches across the country.
They are demanding government action against a relentless tide of killings, abductions and shootouts in the central American country. Violence has risen since President Felipe Calderon, who took office at the end of 2006, launched a crackdown on drug trafficking and related attacks. This included the deployment of more than 36,000 soldiers across the country. Some 2,700 people have been killed in Mexico this year.
