Irish "no" complication,will not threaten EU - Czech PM ... of the ratification process. The Senate, dominated by the senior ruling Civic Democrats (ODS), asked the court to check the treaty's compatibility with the Czech constitution in April. The ratification process was complicated by the fact that Ireland said "no" to the treaty in a referendum in June.
To date the treaty has been ratified by parliaments in 24 countries, the remaining two being Czech Republic and Sweden. Former Czech president Vaclav Havel said on the discussion programme that he would wish for the Lisbon treaty's ratification to end by the end of the year, before the beginning of the Czech EU presidency. Havel said if the court revealed that the Lisbon treaty and the Czech Constitution were at variance, it would be a reason to change the Constitution.
