US President George W.
Bush is likely to cancel plans to attend the Republican National Convention and concentrate instead on Hurricane Gustav which is expected to strike Louisiana on Monday. Gustav, which has already killed over 80 people in the Caribbean, is expected to make landfall on Monday afternoon somewhere between western Mississippi and East Texas. The mayor of New Orleans Ray Nagin has ordered a full evacuation of the city. Nagin described Gustav as "the storm of the century" and urged all residents to comply with the evacuation demand. Bush and his administration were harshly criticized for failing to adequately prepare and respond when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and the Gulf Coast three years ago.
