The outer edge of Hurricane Gustav has reached the Mississippi Delta in the US state of Louisiana.
The Category 3 storm is packing winds of up to 200 kilometres per hour and has forced the evacuation of nearly two million people along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. A dusk-to-dawn curfew is in force in New Orleans, which was haunted by a crime wave after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city three years ago.
