Gul's trip represents a key step towards ending almost a century of animosity between the two neighbours. They have no diplomatic relations and their joint border has been closed for years. Ankara rejects Yerevan's campaign for the deaths of Armenian civilians under Ottoman rule to be classified as genocide. Armenia says up to 1.5 million people were killed in orchestrated massacres during World War I as Turkey's former empire fell apart. Turkey rejects the genocide label and argues that 300,000 Armenians and at least as many Turks died during Armenia's struggle for independence in eastern Anatolia.
