Ukrainian lawmakers loyal to President Viktor Yushchenko have formally pulled out of the governing coalition.
Under the constitution, the coalition made up of Yuschenko's party and that of his rival, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, now have 10 days to resolve their differences and a further four days to publish a new agreement. The coalition started to crumble in earnest after Tymoshenko's party joined forces with the opposition to pass a law that curbs presidential powers while enhancing those of the prime minister. Yushchenko said the move was unconstitutional and threatened to call snap parliamentary elections. Yushchenko and Tymoshenko were close allies during the 2004 Orange Revolution but the infighting between the two coalition partners has steadily increased in the lead up to a 2010 presidential election.
