United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon has urged donor nations to boost their aid by 13 billion euros a year, warning that otherwise the world will fail to halve poverty by 2015.
That was one of the Millennium goals set at a G8 summit three years ago. In an report preceding a review conference in New York late this month, Ban says the world is "running out of time". The report notes improvements in debt relief for poor countries but gaps in fulfilling trade and development commitments. Wealthier nations are only contributing 0.28 percent of their combined Gross National Income, as opposed to the UN target of 0.7 percent. At an aid conference in Ghana, World Bank President Robert Zoellick has said bureaucracy that hampers the delivery of aid must be removed to tackle the current food and pricing crisis gripping many poorer countries.
