In the Caribbean Tropical storm Hanna has left Haiti's northern city of Gonaives inundated by deep floodwaters.
United Nations peacekeepers say 250,000 residents are affected and they are trying to distribute food in boats. Gonaives lies in a river plain below deforested mountains. Aid workers say central America's poorest nation will need a major relief effort. Hanna, which left at least 61 dead in Haiti and destroyed crops, is now off the Bahamas, with sustained winds of 100 kilometres per hour, as it heads toward the US east coast. Forecasters are also worried by Hurricane Ike. The category four storm is packing winds of 220 kilometres per hour over the Atlantic. It's currently off the Leeward Islands.
