Chinese floods kill dozens ... Cheney has reiterated Washington's support of Ukraine's bid to join the Western military alliance NATO. Following a meeting with Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko in Kiev, Cheney said a commitment made at a NATO summit back in April, which offered Ukraine eventual membership, still stands. Ukraine is the last of three former Soviet republics that Cheney has been visiting in a show of support following the conflict between Georgia and Russia. On Thursday, Cheney met with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili in Tbilisi, where he stressed the need to resolve the status of his country's two separatist regions, South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Meanwhile the OSCE says military observers have now entered a Russian buffer zone inside Georgia for the time since last month's five-day war between the two countries.
