US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has arrived in Tripoli for a landmark meeting with Libyan leader Muhammar Ghadhaffi.
She is the first top American diplomat in more than half a century to visit the North African country. Her visit marks the full renewal of US relations with Tripoli, which were suspended in the early 1980s. This came shortly after Washington placed Libya on its list of state sponsors of terrorism. Italy to sign landmark compensation deal with Libya ... the bombing of a US passenger plane over the Scottish town of Lockerbie in 1988. Icy relations between the two countries began to thaw in 2003 after Tripoli abandoned its programme to produce weapons of mass destruction. Libya is the first leg of Rice's four-nation tour of North Africa, which will also take her to Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco.
