At least eleven people were killed and 16 injured on Saturday when dozens of homes in northern Cairo collapsed under a rockslide. Egyptian security officials said the toll was likely to rise. Several huge lumps of rock weighing hundreds of tonnes broke off a hill overlooking a shanty town outside the capital.
Rescue teams on site were struggling to make progress because of the size of the boulders. They were forced to wait for cranes and heavy lifting equipment to move the rocks. The cause of the rockfall was not immediately known.
