The European Union has agreed to send an autonomous mission to Georgia to monitor Russia's withdrawal from territory occupied during last month's war over the Black Sea Republic's breakaway province, South Ossetia.
The announcement came following an informal two day meeting between EU foreign ministers. French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said EU observers would initially join an existing monitoring force of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has called for an independent inquiry into the Georgia conflict, saying the results could affect future EU ties with either Georgia or Russia.
