Relations between the two countries, which have no diplomatic ties, have been strained since Armenia occupied the Azeri enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh 15 years ago and by Turkey's refusal to acknowledge as genocide the deaths of up to 1.5 million ethnic Armenians under the Ottoman Empire. Gul, who is to attend a football match with his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sarksyan, said he hoped the visit would aid security in the Caucasus region. Several hundred angry nationalist protestors lined the route of Gul's motorcade as it made its way into the capital.
