Celebrations are underway in Pakistan, following Asif Ali Zardari's sweeping victory in presidential elections.
Speaking after release of the results, Zardari said his government would seek complete democracy in honour of his assassinated wife, former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Britain and the US have pledged to work closely with Zardari in areas such as counterterrorism and economic stability. Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said he hoped ties between Pakistan and Iran would expand. Zardari replaces Pervez Musharraf who resigned last month amid threats of parliamentary impeachment. The Pakistan People's Party now holds the presidency and leads the government. Coinciding with the election, witnesses say a suicide car bomber killed around 30 people and injured 80 at a police checkpoint near the northwestern city of Peshawar.
