Merkel on first official visit to Algeria ... publications say senior party members made the decision at the request of Steinmeier. The SPD has shared power with Merkel's conservative CDU party in a grand coalition since the 2005 election. The poll gave neither party enough votes to govern with a preferred junior partner.
