German President Horst Köhler has begun the official part of his state visit to China with a reception at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Chinese President Hu Jintao greeted the German head of state there. During initial talks with Hu, Köhler explained again why he attended the opening of the Paralympic Games on Saturday and not those of the Olympic Games last month. Köhler, who himself has a daughter with a visual impairment, said he wanted to pay tribute to those with disabilities. President Hu thanked Germany again for its relief help in the aftermath of Sichuan province earthquake earlier this year.
