Meteorologists in the United States have called Ike "extremely dangerous" and say it could dump as much as 30 centimetres of rain and cause massive storm surge flooding. The region is just recovering from Tropical Storm Hanna which ravaged northern Haiti last week in particular. The death toll in the Caribbean state has risen to 500 people from Hanna and international aid is only slowly reaching affected areas in the north. Some 200,000 Haitians currently have little or no food and drinking water.
