The heads of Germany's Social Democrats are to begin shortly a party conference near Berlin in which it is expected they will name Frank-Walter Steinmeier as their candidate for chancellor in national elections due next year.
Various news sources reported on Saturday that SPD leaders designated the German foreign minister upon his own request to run against current chancellor Angela Merkel of the conservative CDU party. The SPD and CDU have shared power in a grand coalition since elections in 2005.
