European Union president Jose Manuel Barroso offered EU support for Pakistan and said he hoped the new government in Islamabad would implement the right policies to meet economic and security challenges in the country. Both the US and Britain said it would be important to fight violent extremism. Meanwhile, the death toll from a powerful suicide blast in northwest Pakistan has risen to 33 after more bodies were found and several people died in hospital. The attack happened near the city of Peshawar on Saturday just as Asif Ali Zardari was elected president.
