Early results from parliamentary elections last week in Angola show the ruling party of President Jose Eduardo Dos Santos with an overwhelming lead.
Angolan election officials said that counting some two million votes of a possible eight million, the ruling MPLA collected more than 80 percent. The opposition UNITA lie at just over 10 percent. It is expected to take several more days for all ballots to be counted. The vote was marred by organisational problems so that voting in the capital Luanda had to be extended one more day. The parliamentary election was the first in 16 years.
