The junior partners in Germany's grand coalition, the Social Democrats, are making some big decisions at a party conference near Berlin.
Various media outlets reported already on Saturday that at the meeting the SPD would name current foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier as their candidate for chancellor in national elections due next year. Steinmeier urged the party to put him up against Chancellor Angela Merkel of the conservative CDU party. Now, German public broadcaster SWR reports based on sources close to the SPD leadership that party chairman Kurt Beck is to resign. Former chairman Franz Müntefering is supposed to return as party head.
