Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has called a snap election for 14th October in a bid to strengthen his leadership after two-and-a-half years in power.
Opinion polls suggest that Harper's Conservative Party government has a large lead over the opposition liberals and could win a majority in parliament. Opponents say Harper is breaking an electoral law that fixed the date of the next election for next year but the Prime Minister said early elections were necessary to break a deadlock with opposition parties in parliament. This will be Canada's third election in four years.
