Speaking after a meeting of German Social Democratic party members in Berlin, the SPD General Secretary has announced that Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier will be the Social Democrat's candidate for chancellor against conservative incumbent Angela Merkel in 2009.

Chinese floods kill dozens ... from his position as SPD chairman and will be replaced by former SPD chairman Franz Muentefering. Steinmeier officially announced his candidacy at a news conference in Berlin, saying also that it had been his suggestion to recall Muentefering as party leader. Steinmeier said he believed Muentefering could unite the party and form a successful election campaign with him in 2009.
