Poland's last communist leader, General Wojciech Jaruzelski, has gone on trial along with seven other former top ranking officials for imposing martial law in 1981.
The defendants are accused of human rights violations in their attempt to crush the then opposition Solidarity movement. Jaruzelski is specifically accused of ordering soldiers to shoot on dock workers, who were protesting over higher food prices. The 85-year-old said he needed to impose marital law to head off the possibility of a Russian invasion. If convicted he could face up to 10 years in Deutsche Bank swoops on Postbank ...
