German pilots' union calls for more walkouts ... attempt by Georgia's government to militarily retake the breakaway pro-Russian region of South Ossetia. Early this week, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, mediating on behalf of the EU, secured a pullback promise from Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. The deal allows for the deployment of 200 EU observers. Russia has said it will retain several thousand troops in South Ossetia and another breakaway region, Abkhazia. Georgia is a key transist region for oil and gas deliveries to the West.
