Hurricane Ike, a giant storm which has already left 100 dead in the Caribbean, is bearing down on the US state of Texas and its oil port hub of Houston.
Officials say Ike will thrust a six-metre high ocean surge over 160 kilometres of coastline. More than a million Texans have fled inland, but another 100,000 remain. Last gasp for Germany's bars ... have already spilled over a seawall, flooding parts of the island city of Galverston. Nearby, a shipping freighter with 22 people on board is stranded without power in Ike's path. Oil and gas facilities in the gulf, which account for a quarter of the United States' oil production, have been shut down. Forecasters have warned that Ike could send wates surging up the shipping canal toward Houston, a city of five million.
