The search operation is said to be the biggest in the history of the state. Ike, which has now been downgraded to a tropical storm, cut off electricity for millions of Texans. It also blew out skyscraper windows and swamped thousands of homes along the gulf coast. A spokesman for Texas Governor Rick Perry told reporters in Houston that almost 1,000 people had already been rescued after being stranded in homes, vehicles and elsewhere. US President George W. Bush has declared parts of the state a disaster area.
