The European Commission has announced 500 million euros in aid to Georgia to help in reconstruction following its conflict with Russia over the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
A spokeswoman for EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner said the aid package would last until 2010 and was intended to give assistance to displaced people and help in economic reconstruction. Georgia normally receives between 30 and 40 million euros per year from the European Commission under the EU's so-called "neighbourhood" programme.
