The European Union has called on the Philippine government and Muslim separatist rebels to resume peace talks amid an escalation of fighting in the country's southern Mindanao region.
The EU issued a statement in which it condemned the "indiscriminate" killing of civilians and warned it could affect future aid. The unrest has claimed the lives of dozens of civilians and displaced more than half a million people since the fighting started in early August. The Moro Islamic Liberation Front raided villages and killed at least 37 people after the Supreme Court blocked a draft peace agreement that would have given the Muslim minority substantial control over large areas of the south.
