Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic has confirmed that he plans to defend himself at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
Speaking at a pre-trial hearing the 63-year-old doubted that he would receive a fair trial and repeated claims that US peace envoy Richard Holbrooke offered him immunity from prosecution in 1996. Karadzic's charges include genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. He is alleged to have known about the killing of thousands of civilians in Srebrenica in 1995 by Bosnian Serb forces, and the shelling of Sarajevo. Karadzic had been on the run for some 12 years before his arrest in Belgrade on July 21. Serbian authorities extradited him to The Hague on July 30.
