Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni is seeking to build a new coalition government, after winning a leadership ballot for the ruling Kadima party.
Livni aims to preserve the alliance forged by her predecessor, Ehud Olmert, which includes the centre-left Labour party and the Jewish religious party, Shas. The United States administration hopes that a Livni government might still reach a peace deal with the Palestinians by the end of the year. Livni needs to form a new coalition within 42 days, or accept fresh elections. The right wing opposition Likud party is calling for snap elections, which polls suggest it would probably win. Meanwhile, Transport Minister Shaul Mofaz, says he will not stay in the Israeli cabinet after narrowly losing to Livni in the Kadima leadership ballot.
