22.09.2008 - UN extends Afghan mandate amid civilian casualty concerns

The UN Security Council has voted to keep international troops in Afghanistan for another year and called on countries to boost their force commitments to deal with growing instability.

the NATO-led force until at least October 2009. The council said the ISAF mission needed more troops and equipment to improve the situation. A Taliban resurgence has sparked an surge in violence in Afghanistan since the spring. At the same time, the council expressed serious concern with the high number of civilian casualties. Afghan President Hamid Karzai has said civilian deaths caused by US and NATO military action undermine his government and the international mission.
