South Africa's ruling African National Congress is in tatters following the shock resignation of 11 cabinet ministers and three deputy ministers.
The Ministers walked out after the party ousted President Thabo Mbeki. Six ministers said they refused to return to serve under ANC deputy leader Kgalema Motlanthe, who is expected to be elected acting president by parliament on Thursday. The rest had resigned because they had been appointed by Mbeki and were waiting to be reappointed by Motlanthe. The ANC had appealed to Mbeki's cabinet loyalists to remain in office after Mbeki was forced out on the weekend, on suspicion of interfering in a corruption case against party leader Jacob Zuma.
