The Iraqi parliament has agreed to extend the deadline for provincial elections until January 31, 2009.
The decision came after months of heated dispute on the issue of power-sharing in the multi-ethnic of Kirkuk. Iraq's Kurds want the oil-rich city to be included in the autonomous Kurdistan region. Kurdish, Shiite, Sunni and Turkomen legislators agreed to form a parliamentary committee to review disputes regarding the northern city. The fact-finding committee is to present a report by March 2009.
