But the talks were called off after the Russian foreign ministry issued a statement saying that Moscow didn't consider it urgent enough. This comes amid heightened tensions between Moscow and the West since last month's five-day long war between Russia and Georgia. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has expressed serious concern about the cancellation of the talks. He told reporters in New York that without the meeting it would be more difficult for the international community to bring the necessary diplomatic pressure to bear on Iran, to convince it to halt its uranium enrichment activities.
