Italy's leading union has dropped its objections to a rescue plan for the national flagship airline Alitalia and has apparently signed an agreement with the government.
The ANSA news agency reported that the decision came after Italy's Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi summoned union leaders to his office early Thursday as the bankrupt airline was on the verge of losing its license to fly. According to the agency, Italian investors who withdrew an offer for Alitalia now appear to be back at the negotiating table. The airline's government-appointed administrator said he believes a deal could be reached for the company's sale by Sept. 30.
