He was disqualified from sitting in parliament and working as a lawyer for several years on various legal charges, seen by many as politically motivated. This year, he helped form the new Reform Party and had been planning to run for office once more at the time of his death. The opposition plays only a marginal role in Singapore, which has been ruled by the People's Action Party since the country gained independence from Malaysia in 1965.
